Research consistently supports the idea that eating together as a family can be a protective factor for a variety of outcomes, particularly for children and adolescents. Our More than a Meal campaign focuses on this research and works to foster more intentional conversation over the mealtime - or in the car or wherever you can create space for it!

It's about more than a meal - eat, talk, connect and flourish as a family!

Improved Mental Health & Well-being

Studies show that family meals are linked to better mental health outcomes for youth. Eating together fosters communication, emotional support, and a sense of connection, which are all important for reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.

Better Academic Performance

The Journal of Nutrition Education & Behavior found that children who ate with their families had higher grades and were more engaged in school. The family meal setting can help improve focus, discipline, and the development of healthy cognitive skills.

Reduction in Risky Behaviors

Family mealtime is associated with a reduction in risky behaviors such as substance misuse, smoking, and early sexual activity. A Pediatrics study found adolescents who frequently ate with their families were less likely to engage in risky behaviors. Regular family meals provide a setting for open communication, which can foster opportunities for connection and safety.

Promotion of Positive Social Skills

Family meals can serve as a forum for teaching social skills, good table manners, and the value of shared time. Studies show that children and teens who eat together as a family are more likely to have strong interpersonal skills and are better equipped to handle social situations outside the home.

Cultural and Tradition Reinforcement

For many families, shared meals are also an opportunity to pass down cultural traditions and values, fostering a sense of identity and belonging. A study from The Journal of Adolescent Health noted that these shared rituals contribute to positive psychological outcomes for children.
